Margarita and Kirill requested a wine tour to Priorat wine region departing from Tarragona. They wanted to discover why Priorat land has become one of the most rewarded wine regions in the world in terms of reds.

Incredibly, this region has reached the summit in just two decades and has begun to play an important international role in the wine industry. It’s already known as “the Priorat miracle”.

Knowing the requirements, we designed a program with a clear priority: savor and learn about Priorat red wines!

There is no doubt that to reach that goal is required to step on for a while on the terraced vineyards of the Priorat, which can be described as harsh climate, hard life, poor vineyards, and extraordinary wines.

We scheduled the first stop at a Premium winery where we walked through some vineyards of the indigenous varieties - Garnacha and Carinyena - to understand the difficulty of growing vines in this rough landscape that defines the way of life here and the personality of the vine.

Although we went even further and Sara drove us to the top of the hilly vineyards with a 4x4 vehicle. Up there we were able to enjoy the astonishing views Priorat had to offer; surrendered of rugged mountains, steep valleys, and protected by The Montsant mountain range. Definitely a unique, breathtaking wine landscape!

At this moment, on this beautiful “patio”, we tested the rose wine that the cellar just launched on the market, a fruity deep rose wine. While the tasting was going on we were educated about the best-known secret of Priorat wines: the Llicorella, slate stones soil that shape this land and feed the vines.

Once we got back to the cellar, Margarita and Kirill were already amazed by the incredible landscape, but it was time to sample the results of the vineyards seen. Is there any better place for a wine tasting than an outstanding barrel room?

Surrounded by wooden casks we tasted the wide range of wines of this Premium winery, savoring the personality of the old vines visited, which produce intense, warm, and exuberant red wines.

Next stop a few kilometers away, the little village of Porrera. The drive from one point to the other in Priorat is real entertainment. Many of the rural roads are so narrow and steep that they offer stunning views of the valleys and vineyards below.

Once in Porrera, it was time for history and traditions, we learned it by the hand of Enric, a passionate local hunter that tells you every single tale and war stories of this area. We visited his centenary house (origins from the XII century) with plenty of collector's pieces, which has turned to be a wine history museum.

Achieving up to the top floor of the old house, where we were offered a wine tasting of the most representative wines from this small town. Porrera, with no more than 400 citizens, hosts around 20 cellars. As assumed the lack of wine is not an issue!

The last wine tasting was paired with a nice selection of local organic appetizers on an authentic centenarian gallery.

On the way back to Tarragona, Margarita and Kirill tried to explain in a few words what they had experienced in the Priorat. They tried it hard but they could not do it. Priorat is a wine region that has to be stepped on!

Summary of the experience:

  • Premium winery visit
  • Premium Priorat wine tasting
  • Historical house tickets
  • Wine tasting on the terrace

Priorat has made its way in the wine world fairly recently, after a rural exodus, the land has literally been rediscovered, and now its landscape is facing the candidacy of the World Heritage Site for the UNESCO. Margarita and Kirill already know why, do you want to be the next one?
